Keep Your Home Cool For Less

If you are worried about running your air conditioner as much as you would like to due concerns about your energy bills, there are some changes you can make to cut those costs. The more you can ensure your air conditioning system is working less to cool your home, the more you can afford to run it. This article will help you make sure your air conditioning is working at a minimum while keeping your home as cool and comfortable as possible.

Take proper care of the condenser

The condenser for your central air conditioner is outside and this makes it an easy component for you to ignore. However, it is an especially important part of the system that controls most of the inner workings.

Your condenser should be provided with some shade so it doesn't take a beating from the sun's harsh rays. Installing an awning is a great way to provide shade and increase the lifespan of the belts and other components.

The area around the condenser should also be kept as clean as possible. Allowing weeds to grow near it can increase the amount of debris that goes in the condenser area and can get stuck in the fan.

Go outside and listen to the condenser every once in a while. If you hear anything that sounds like a squeaking, rattling or clanking, then you should have someone come out and look at it.

Keep the filter clean

Keeping the filter clean is very important when it comes to keeping your air conditioner running good and not raising energy bills. When the filter is full of dust, the system will need to work harder to pull air through and this means using more energy.

Replace old weather stripping

Check the weather stripping around all the doors and windows. If any is old and cracking, remove it and clean the area. Replace the old weather stripping with new adhesive weather stripping by peeling off the paper on the back side and sticking it in place.

Tint your windows

Tinting your windows is a great way to preserve the cool air in your house. Without the tint, the air conditioner will be competing with the sun's heat as it penetrates through the windows.

Have the system maintenance annually

Having an HVAC technician, such as Elite Heating, Cooling and Plumbing, come out at the start of the season to look your system over can save you in many different ways. The technician will know what to look for with regards to equipment problems, leaks in the system and other potential issues.
