As the temperature drops you are probably wondering what you can do to keep your house warm and comfortable without breaking the bank with your heating bill. If you are not careful you can easily overpay on your bill in attempts to keep your house warm. 1. Close The Doors Of Unused Rooms
If you have any rooms that are not being used regularly you should keep those doors shut. When the furnace heats up the house it tries to heat up every room that it has access to. This means that if you have a guest room that is only used a couple times a year, and you keep the door open, the furnace has to work extra hard to heat that room that doesn't get used. Instead, you should shut the door, and even close the vents if you want to make the space the furnace has to heat smaller. In addition, make sure that you close the door to the basement and storage rooms. Anywhere that generates gold air will cool down the entire house and it will cost a lot to try and heat these areas. This is why keeping the doors shut will save you money.
2. Cover The Floors
If you have hard flooring in your house consider investing in rugs that you use during the winter. Hardwood and tile are awesome in the summer when you need to keep the house cool, but in the winter they poorly insulate your home. You will have to turn up your heater extra high to keep the house warm, all because the house is holding the air in.

3. Program The Thermometer
Another easy way to save money is to program the thermometer so that it doesn't waste energy when it doesn't need it. For instance, while everyone is home during the day you should set it higher so everyone is comfortable. But in the night when everyone is sleeping there is no need to be blasting the heat. Everyone should be warm in their blankets, so you can get away with lowering the thermostat a couple degrees. This simple change will save you a good deal of money.
